Personalities

For a long time, I was scared to draw people. It was intimidating---everyone knows what a person looks like. So many things could go wrong. Then, I took a couple of courses to help me let go of those ideas. The first was a Faces class by Lynn Whipple. She made creating faces into fun exercises, the weirder the better. The next was a class by Nelleke Verhoeff. Again, she made it so fun---and her characters are super quirky. The connecting thread between the two classes was the light hearted way the instructors approached people and faces. Simple shapes became bodies. Arms were cut from magazines. I was able to loosen up and make loveable characters. I go through phases of what I like to make, and right now, I'm enjoying seeing a little face come to life each morning in my small sketchbook.
