Seasonality in a Jar
I have a very good understanding of what's seasonal and local. In the fall, apples, yes, cucumbers, not so much. I'm fine with the idea that after the next week or so, local tomatoes are not to be found until next June. But since I've been selling my jams, the whole idea of seasonality has taken on a new meaning. As in no more strawberry jam until next year. No more blueberry, or black currant, or rose petal. I can make lots of pear preserves, pear butter, apple sauce and butter....but still, I'm a little sad. The customers seem to be taking the news better than me at the moment. Maybe when they come to me in December, looking for my special strawberry and vanilla bean jam, they might feel my pain. Hopefully, the one thing that can get me through this rough time is my new copy of Blue Fruit Jam Cookbook.
